Within LIR comes the creation of a laboratory, the Infrared Imaging and Thermography Laboratory, LATIR, is endowed by the Madrid and Universidad Carlos III, to promote the applications of IR and support to other labs, centers and companies within Community of Madrid and the rest of Spain that requires this knowledge.

IR Technology

Infrared technology is a very horizontal technique based on a science: Optics. It has important applications in Medicine, Environmental Sciences, Arts, Security or Industry in general.

Its scientific applications are based in the interaction of matter with IR radiation , which coincides with the vibration and rotation energy of the chemical bond of the most of the compounds. This is the same effect the global warming has; the solar radiation is absorbed by carbon dioxide and methane.

The first application is the chemical analysis by IR spectroscopy. This has been profusely used during more than a century. Since the 60’s, IR imaging sensors have been developed making a great progress in IR cameras possible, although it was, firstly, thought for a military purpose. Subsequently, this technology became cheaper and easier, which allowed some university laboratories, as LIR, access to it and start to adapt it to civil applications.

In this way, accurate values and measurements without contact can be obtained. For example, some gases, fire risk and its early detection, etc. can be detected.

Moreover, other basic principle takes part in this technology: any body above the absolute zero temperature (-273°C) emits electromagnetic radiation according to the Planck’s law.

At room temperatures, the most of this emission is infrared radiation, invisible to the human eye, but not invisible to this IR cameras which use the emitted energy by the object (passive detection) and they do not need external lighting.
